Laughing at Yourself

The ability to laugh at yourself is an essential part of the practice.  That's the message Thannisaro Bhikkhu has for us in two talks on this website:  A Sense of Humor and A Humorous Perspective.  I have to say that laughing at myself has gotten a lot easier as I've gotten older.  When I was younger and taking everything so seriously (or more seriously), screwing up or doing something stupid and embarrassing was extremely painful.  It was also usually followed by long periods of intense suffering.  Now I've pretty much come to terms with my space cadet ways, fuck ups and fears and just have to try to laugh at my imperfection.  It's not an easy thing to do but if you can, it sure beats painful periods of dwelling on useless regrets.  The two talks are around 5 and 10 minutes so have a listen and think about it.  Can you laugh at yourself?
