Equanimity

I want to share something from a great book I'm reading:  "Emotional Alchemy:  How the Mind Can Heal the Heart" by Tara Bennett-Goleman.  The book is a combination of wisdom and knowledge from Buddhism and Psychotherapy.  Bennett-Goleman discusses how practicing mindfulness can help us to develop our ability to see things as they truly are and free ourselves from the distorted lenses through which we view and judge things.  She offers a way to increase our awareness so that we can recognize patterns of behaviour that can lead to emotional turmoil in our lives and examines the root causes of those patterns.

The words I want to share come from an exercise in the book for cultivating equanimity.  Silently repeat these words to yourself and reflect on what they mean to you:

May I accept things as they are.  I wish you happiness and well-being, but I cannot make your choices for you or control the way things are.

Keep coming back to these words for a few minutes and see if it evokes a feeling of equanimity for you.  I found they have quite a freeing effect and keep coming back to them again and again throughout the day.
