Sense Doors

Gotama gives a description of a way the sense doors operate in John D. Irelands translation of the Samyutta Nikaya.

The Roots to Everything

The Moon's a waning and 'tis in Scorpio, perhaps a good time to transplant some Dharma.
These words of the Buddha are found in the Anguttra Nikaya by Nyanaponika Thera.

23 The Roots to All Things

"...In what way are all things rooted? Whereby do they come to actually exist? Where do they arise? Where do they converge? What is the foremost in all thing? What is there master? What is the highest of all things? What is the essence of all things? Where do all things merge? Where do they end?..."

In Whose Sole Sway

What is it that whereby the world is led?
What is it that whereby 'tis being dragged?
And what is it that in whose sole sway
One and all have come to stay?

By mind is it that the world is led.
By mind is it that the world is dragged
And by mind is it in whose sole sway
One and all have come to stay.

from Samyutta Nikaya by John D. Ireland

Cool It

Enlightenment is a lot less complicated than most make it out to be.  The Buddha's enlightenment occurred when there was around 20 million people in the whole world (presently the population of Sri Lanka). Compare that with the sensual exploits of the 6.6 billion people here today.  So enlightenment isn't realistic.  An enlightened attitude however is a boon right through dying.

Words no Words

Silent encouragement from the Buddha's Samyutta by John D. Ireland.

What is it that overwhelmed everything?
What is it that not else excels?
What is it that to which one thing
Everything else its course doth bend?

'Tis name that has overwhelmed everything
Nought else exists that excels name
And Name itself is that one thing
Beneath whose sway all others came.
